Star Trek: Pendragon

Gathering Storm, Session 1
The Pendragon departs SB129 for a frontier world where something familiar has been uncovered.

“Captain’s log, Stardate 49902.6. The Pendragon has finished her repairs at Starbase 129. Ahead of our departure, Admiral Marcus has issued our next set of orders. It seems that an archaeological dig Empra IV has found something of interest, particularly to this crew. With every other starship in the sector assigned to patrol duties, or hunting down the planets recovered from the Klingon vessel, it seems we’re heading back to the frontier.”

"Emergency Response" - Session #2
The away team investigates the attacks on the surface of the planet, while the Pendragon returns to orbit.

“Captain’s log, supplemental. We were able to follow the Klingon ion trails to the eighth planet in the system; however, upon reaching the far side of the planet’s only moon all traces were lost. Sensors did pick up traces of magneton energy, but the science department has not been able to explain it as of yet. We have set course back for the colony, and plan to reconnect with the away team in just over two hours.”

The away team (Sardak, Aphix, Marcus, Malone, and the security detail) set off for the site of the mysterious complex; the trip took just over three hours in the old sub-orbital scout craft. When they arrived the began taking scans of the area looking for any signs of non-native life signs (tac) and materials (sci). While comparing the scans to past images, Lieutenant Marcus realizes that the trace dilithium signatures that the colony prospectors found a short distance away were no longer present.

Once on the ground the team also notes that the ground where the complex should have been had been burnt away nearly twenty meters below the surrounding surface. Any traces of the buildings had been vaporized in the attack. They did detect, however, a small cavity about twenty feet underground; roughly one meter in diameter, it appeared to be a tunnel of some sort running directly away from the blast zone towards where the dilithium readings had been taken.

They then set off on foot to investigate the missing dilitihum readings. They walked just over a kilometer through the deciduous forest, until they came to a small clearing. Commander Sardak began postulating what the tunnel could have been used for and, upon finding the terminus of the tunnel on the surface, deduced it had been used to transport something from the clearing to the buildings (or vice versa). They immediately began searching for evidence of a cloaked ship.

Lieutenant Marcus began scanning for elevated neutrinos, Doctor Aphix searched for any biological traces in the area, and Commander Sardak looked for physical evidence of a ship; Lieutenant Malone and team secured the area and assisted in the search. Both the science and medical scans came up negative, though Sardak found imprints in the ground that could possibly have been left by a small vessel resting on the surface; a test for a present vessel (he threw a stick where a landing gear would have been) came up negative.

At that point in time, Lieutenant Marcus decided to investigate the tunnel further, crawling down inside to take more accurate scans and physical samples to take back with her. While most of her scans came up empty-handed, she was able to spot two semi-circular indentions on the floor of the tunnel where something had been resting; it appeared to run the full length of the tunnel.

The team was discussing the indentions when the Pendragon arrived back in orbit, and Captain Hardwick contacted Commander Sardak. Both officers gave brief reports, and Captain Hardwick requested Lieutenant Marcus return to the vessel when able; she beamed back immediately. Commander Sardak requested engineering teams be sent to assist the colony repair efforts.

- On the Pendragon… -

Arriving back on the vessel, Lieutenant Marcus was directed to the science labs where her teams were attempting to analyze data found during the vessel’s attempt to follow the Klingon ion trails. Research indicated that the magneton energy detected was mostly likely done purposefully by the pursued vessel to dissipate their trail. She also collaborated with Lieutenant Korvig (the Chief Engineer) regarding some of the unexplained data found on the surface (mainly the indentions in the tunnel); the Tellarite was quick to criticize the young woman, and explained that the size roughly matched those used on starships for energy conduits (which, being made with materials designed to restrict interference from power supplies, explained why nothing was picked up by their tricorders on the surface).

- On the surface… -

While Lieutenant Marcus worked on board the ship, Commander Sardak asked an engineering team to attempt to refine the sensors on the scout ship. With the outdated technology, they were finished with their efforts in less time than it took to make the trip back to the crater (along with Lieutenant Malone); Doctor Aphix returned to the colony’s medical center to continue giving assistance.

Upon arriving back on the scene, Commander Sardak was able to detect minute traces of neutrino particles in the clearing, solid evidence that a cloaked ship had likely been parked there some time ago. He was able to postulate that the vessel had been absent for at least a couple weeks.

He reported this back to the Pendragon; Captain Hardwick requested the away team return to the vessel for a full debriefing and planning session. All team members returned to the vessel without incident.

"Emergency Response" - Session #1
The Starship Pendragon responds to an emergency distress call.

“Captain’s Log, Stardate 49853.3. We have been ordered to Omicron Eta a colony in the Beloti Sector, in response to an automated distress signal intercepted by the subpace relay network. Starfleet Command has little information to offer about what is transpiring on the colony, leaving the Pendragon flying in blind.”

After recieving the Priority One message from Starfleet Command, Captain Matthew Hardwick called for a meeting of he senior staff. Converging in the conference room, Hardwick explained the situation: an automated distress beacon from a colony world outside the Federation’s borders. The Chief Science Officer, Lieutenant (JG) Miranda Marcus, accessed information on Omicron Eta in the LCARS database, and detailed the following to the rest of the staff:

- The colony was founded in 2190 by civilian deep-space colonists from Earth. It was a prime source of dilithium during the Federation’s early years.
- The planet sits in an unclaimed area of the Beloti Sector, near both Federation and Cardassian territory.
- The colony cut off communication with the Federation in 2344; no reason was given in the computer files.
- The colony’s population at last count (in 2344) was 30,122.

The Pendragon’s Chief Medical Officer, Doctor Aphix, requested scans be completed on arrival to look for any pathogens in the atmosphere (theorizing that the signal could be in relation to an epidemic of some sort). Lieutenant Marcus agreed, and made plans to run her own scans. Doctor Aphix made plans to have Cargo Bay Three converted into an emergency ward. The meeting ended with Captain Hardwick ordering the vessel to proceed at maximum warp (ETA 6 hours).

Upon arrival to the <planet> System, the Chief Security Officer (Lieutenant (JG) Andrew Malone), began running scans of the immediate area, while Lieutenant Marcus focused her efforts on the planet. The following were the results of the scans:

- No pathogens or other biological agents were found in the atmosphere; instead a large amount of smoke and ash were present. (Sci)
- Further scans indicated a large amount of damage across much of colony’s primary settlements; entire villages had been decimated.
- Humanoid life signs located on the surface; 2236 Human, 1004 Cardassian (Sci)
- Weapon traces were present in orbit; analysis of traces indicated Klingon weapon signatures. (Tac)
- 3 ion trails were located in orbit; analysis of traces indicated Klingon warp signatures. (Tac)

Captain Hardwick ordered Commander Sardak (Executive Officer) to take an away team to the surface to check on survivors, while the Pendragon would work to trace the Klingon vessels. Commander Sardak instructed Doctor Aphix, Lieutenant Marcus, Lieutenant Malone and two security noncoms to report to the transporter room.

When the team arrived in the main settlement, they found a city in near ruin. Most of the buildings showed damage or were completely destroyed. They had materialized in a plaza near the capitol building, and after making contact with nearby citizens they made their way inside. There they made contact with Jonas Quinn, the colony administrator.

From him they learned the population of the planet had been over 300,000 before the attack; Commander Sarkak bluntly informed him of the Pendragon’s scan results. In shock he described how the attack had come out of no where. The Klingons had began with an orbital bombardment before sending down their warriors; they had then proceeded to steal the dilithium stored in the warehouses before leaving. It was over as quickly as it had begun.

Commander Aphix asked if she could be of assistance in any of the colony’s medical facilities, and was escorted to the nearest clinic. She arrived to find chaos in the small facility; she immediately pulled out her own gear and jumped in to help, taking the worst cases first.

Lieutenant Malone asked to see the warehouses from which the dilithium was stolen. He was escorted there, accompanied by two colony peace officers. There he began investigating the area, finding traces of Klingon transporter signatures and transport tags. More solid evidence of Klingon involvement.

Back with Administrator Quinn, Sardack and Marcus continued to question the civilian leader. They learned that the colony had cut off ties with the Federation for politcal and economic reasons, deciding back then to do business with the Ferengi instead; the Ferengi picked up the stored dilithium ever 4-6 months in exchange for latinum (the next pick-up was scheduled for 6 weeks out).

When Commander Sardak asked if anything else unusual had happened prior to the attack, they learned that a prospecting team had discovered a small grouping of structures on the far side of the planet while hunting for dilithium veins. When Lieutenant Marcus pulled up the location of the facility from the Pendragon’s scans, she discovered that the location had been hit during the attack.

In fact, it had been the only place on the far hemisphere that had suffered damage of any kind.

Believing it to be no small coincidence, and with the Pendragon chasing down the warp signatures, Commander Sardak asked if the away team could use the colony’s scout ship (intending to visit where buildings had been located). Administrator Quinn agreed, and Sardak requested that all away team parties rendezvous in the small hangar facility immediately.
